Hebrew Level Aleph (A1) – Building Blocks Beyond the Alef-Bet

Your first steps into real Hebrew communication

What Is Level A1 in Hebrew?

Level A1 is where Hebrew starts to become a living language for you. You’ve already mastered the Alef-Bet and niqqud – now it’s time to build sentences, express basic ideas, and understand everyday Hebrew in context. This level aligns with CEFR A1, adapted for Hebrew’s unique structure and cultural flavor.

Core Language Skills at A1

  • Present Tense Verbs
Start with פָּעַל (pa’al), the most regular verb pattern.
    Example:

    • לִכְתוֹב (likhtov – to write) → כּוֹתֵב (kotev – he writes), כּוֹתֶבֶת (kotevet – she writes)
    • לֶאֱכוֹל (le’ekhol – to eat) → אוֹכֵל (okhel), אוֹכֶלֶת (okhelet)
  • Basic Sentence Structure
    Hebrew typically follows Subject–Verb–Object.
    Example:

    • אֲנִי שׁוֹתֶה קָפֶה. (Ani shoteh kafe – I drink coffee.)
  • Noun-Adjective Agreement
Adjectives must match the gender and number of the noun.
    Example:

    • סֵפֶר יָפֶה (sefer yafe – a beautiful book)
    • סְפָרִים יָפִים (sfarim yafim – beautiful books)
  • Question Words
Learn how to ask simple questions:

    • מָה? (ma – what?)
    • אֵיפֹה? (eyfo – where?)
    • מִי? (mi – who?)
    • כַּמָּה? (kama – how much?)

Vocabulary Themes to Focus On

  • Personal Info: Name, age, country, language
    • Example: אֲנִי מֵאַרְצוֹת הַבְּרִית. (Ani meArtzot HaBrit – I’m from the United States.)
  • Family & People: אִמָּא (ima), אַבָּא (aba), אָח (akh), אָחוֹת (akhot)
  • Numbers & Time:
    • Numbers 1–10: אֶחָד, שְׁנַיִם, שָׁלוֹשׁ…
    • Days of the week: יוֹם רִאשׁוֹן (Sunday), יוֹם שֵׁנִי (Monday)…
  • Food & Objects: תַּפּוּחַ (apple), לֶחֶם (bread), שֻׁלְחָן (table), דֶּלֶת (door)

Sample Dialogues

At the market:

  • מָה זֶה? (Ma ze? – What is this?)
  • זֶה תַּפּוּחַ. (Ze tapuach – This is an apple.)
  • כַּמָּה זֶה עוֹלֶה? (Kama ze oleh? – How much does it cost?)

Meeting someone:

  • שָׁלוֹם, שְׁמִי דָּנִי. (Shalom, shmi Dani – Hello, my name is Dani.)
  • מֵאֵיפֹה אַתָּה? (Me’eyfo ata? – Where are you from?)
  • אֲנִי מֵאַרְצוֹת הַבְּרִית. (Ani meArtzot HaBrit – I’m from the United States.)

Tips for Success

  • Speak aloud: Even if you’re alone, say sentences out loud to build fluency.
  • Use sticky notes: Label items around your home in Hebrew to reinforce vocabulary.
  • Practice reading with niqqud, but start recognizing common words without it.
  • Repeat and shadow: Listen to slow Hebrew and repeat after the speaker.
  • Make it personal: Use Hebrew to talk about your own life – your family, your routine, your favorite foods.
