אֵיזוֹ הִתְרַגְּשׁוּת!  יֵשׁ לִי הַזְמָנָה לְחֲתוּנָּה. חָבֵר שֶׁלִּי מִתְחַתֵּן בְּעוֹד כַּמָּה יָמִים.

What excitement! I have a wedding invitation. My friend is getting married in a few days.

זֹאת הִזְדַּמְּנוּת טוֹבָה לִפְגּוֹשׁ אֲנָשִׁים מֵהֶעָבָר.  אֲנִי מְאוֹד מִתְרַגֵּשׁ מֵהַפְּגִישָׁה אִיתָּם. 

This is a good opportunity to meet people from the past. I am very excited about meeting them.

חֲתוּנָּה זוֹ שִׂמְחָה גְּדוֹלָה!  מָה אַתָּה חוֹשֵׁב עַל חֲתוּנוֹת?

A wedding is a great joy! What do you think about weddings?

בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, אֲנָשִׁים מִתְחַתְּנִים בְּאֶמְצַע הַשָּׁבוּעַ וְלֹא בְּסוֹף שָׁבוּעַ – כְּמוֹ בְּאֵירוֹפָּה וּבְאָמֶרִיקָה. 

In Israel, people get married in the middle of the week and not on the weekend – as in Europe and America.

הַחֲתוּנָּה תָּמִיד בָּעֶרֶב, אָז אֲנָשִׁים בָּאִים אֵלֶיה אַחֲרֵי הָעֲבוֹדָה.

The wedding is always in the evening, so people come to it after (‘the’) work.

זֶה קְצָת מוּזָר בִּגְלַל שֶׁבַּחֲתוּנוֹת בָּאָרֶץ יֵשׁ הַרְבֵּה שִׁירָה וְרִיקּוּדִים.

It’s a little odd because at weddings in Israel there is a lot of singing and dancing.

וּלְמִי יֵשׁ אֶנֶרְגְּיָה לְשִׁירָה וְרִיקּוּדִים אַחֲרֵי יוֹם אָרוֹךְ בַּעֲבוֹדָה?

And (‘to’) who has the energy for singing and dancing after a long day at work?

מָה אַתָּה חוֹשֵׁב עַל זֶה?

בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל, אֲנָשִׁים עוֹשִׂים חֲתוּנוֹת בִּמְקוֹמוֹת מְיוּחָדִים, שֶׁנִּמְצָאִים מִחוּץ לָעִיר.

Usually, people do weddings in special places, which are (‘found’) outside (‘from’) the city.

מְקוֹם הַחֲתוּנָּה לֹא נִמְצָא בְּמֶרְחָק הֲלִיכָה.

The wedding venue is not (‘found’) within walking distance.

רוֹב הָאֲנָשִׁים גָּרִים בָּעִיר – וְהַחֲתוּנָּה בְּקִיבּוּץ אוֹ בְּמוֹשָׁב וְאֵין אוֹטוֹבּוּס.

Most people live in the city – and the wedding is in a Kibbutz or Moshav and there is no bus.

אָז לְאוֹרְחִים יֵשׁ נְהִיגָה אֲרוּכָּה אַחֲרֵי שֶׁהֵם מְסַיְּימִים אֵת הָעֲבוֹדָה. 

So (‘to the’) guests have a long drive after they finish work.

הַדָּבָר הֲכִי חָשׁוּב בַּחֲתוּנָּה הוּא אֲרוּחַת הָעֶרֶב…

The most important thing at a wedding is dinner …

בַּהַתְחָלָה כָּל אוֹרֵחַ מְקַבֵּל מָקוֹם יְשִׁיבָה מִסָּבִיב לַשּׁוּלְחָן וְאָז הָאוֹרְחִים מְדַבְּרִים.  

At first (Lit. ‘In the beginning’) each guest is given (‘gets’) a seat around the table and then the guests talk.

בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל זֶה עַל בִּישּׁוּל, אֲפִיָּיה, אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּיה.

Usually it’s about cooking, baking, eating and drinking.

אֲבָל מוּמְלָץ שֶׁלֹּא לְהַרְבּוֹת בְּאֲכִילָה כִּי זֶה לֹא טוֹב לֶאֱכוֹל הַרְבֵּה בַּלַּיְלָה.

But it is recommended (‘advisable’) not to eat too much (Lit. ‘not to have lots of eating’) because it is not good to eat a lot at night.

וְגַם חָשׁוּב מְאוֹד לֹא לְהַרְבּוֹת בִּשְׁתִיָּיה, כִּי יֵשׁ הַרְבֵּה אַלְכּוֹהוֹל בַּחֲתוּנוֹת בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. 

And it is also very important not to drink a lot (Lit. ‘not to have lots of drinking’) , because there is a lot of alcohol at weddings in Israel.

מָה אַתָּה חוֹשֵׁב? גַּם בַּחֲתוּנוֹת שֶׁאַתָּה מַכִּיר זֶה כָּכָה?
